Having trouble formatting JUST ONE LINE in document. Help!

When I create a new document in Word 2003 and highlight just one line to
format, the formatting is applied to the entire document (bolding,
underlining, centering, etc.) Never had this trouble before. Didn't change
a thing in the program. What's going on? Am I in the Twilight Zone?
