having trouble importing pst files from Outlook XP to 2003

theo

have an archived XP contacts file which after initially
being blocked I renamed and successfully emailed to my new
notebook running 2003. i then saved it in my documents as
a .pst file but after following the steps to import as
outlined in online and program help, my contacts under
2003 arent being restored. I think the problem lays in
the fact that after detailing the file location Ok, the
next step is selecting the folder to import from buts its
not letting me go to the my documents folder location. I
obviously missing something basic, please can some one
help me thru my frustration

Cheers

As i mentioned I'm running office 2003 & outlook 2003 and
when I try to open the .pst file I emailed accross from my
old Outlook XP version on my previous computer, it tells
me that the type of file I'm opening is an office data
file (.pst) which we all know, it then tells me that these
files are used by the operating system and various other
programs and opening could damage the system! it then
proceeds to tell me if i still wish to open it, I need to
click on the "open with" button which I do, it then
presents a list of program types all the office programs
are details except outlook. I then browse to find it,
under program files - office - office11 - outlook. I
highlight it and attempt to open it, all that happens
though is a untitled message window opens with the file
shown in tha attachments panel.

any other suggestions, surely i'm not the only one
experiencing this problem....

Why import at all?
Just open the file in Outlook.

How are you trying to open the file? You cannot double click a PST file to
open it.
Use Outlook > File > Open Outlook Data file...

No matter how i try and open it, it doesn't work. and yes
I have as i outlined in initial message followed the
instructions as detailed in outlook 2003 help, including
via opening an outlook data file. Russ have you had any
practical experience with outlook 2003 yourself??? If so,
Can you or anyone for that matter provide me a step by
step breakdown of how you have successfully managed to get
contacts saved in a .pst file archived from Outlook 2002
restored in contacts in Outlook 2003?

cheers

Not really. I've only been using Outlook 2003 for a year and a half.
Your post is a conundrum of terms from which I cannot discern what exactly
you have done to this poor PST file. Why is "archiving" and e-mailing a part
of this process?
What has worked every single time for me is to copy Outlook 2002 PST file,
open it in Outlook 2003 (without the exporting, archiving and emailing
steps), and copy the Contacts using the "Copy to Folder" command.
