header and footer disappeared

when I open word 2003, I don't see the header and footer. It only appears
when I push the button "header and footer" in the "view" toolbar.
This came all of a sudden. Before things were "normal". Suggestions?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "White space between
pages" box.
