Header and Footer Font Settings Not Retained

Previously I was having a problem with header and footer font settings not
being retained when going between Excel 2001 (OS 9) and Excel 2004 (OS X).
This time just within Excel 2004 the font keeps changing to 12 point Lucida
Grande.

My default Excel spreadsheet font is normally Helvetica 9 and I usually work
in OS 9 with Excel 2001, primarily because of needing to print workbooks to
postscript files.

Switching between Excel 2001 and Excel 2004 the worksheet header and footer
font keeps changing to Lucida Grande 12, the system default font. Body of
worksheet retains font settings fine. This occurred both before and after
the Service Pack 1 update; I didn¹t have the problem with Excel v X. I was
also having problems with worksheets all taking on the custom header/footer
content for sheet #1.

This time I started a new workbook in Excel 2004, setting the fonts to Arial
and Times New Roman for cross platform compatibility. Using 10 point font
for the Headers and Footers. Either way, when I reopen the header/footer I
have 12 pt Lucida Grande again.

I haven¹t noticed any other mentions of this in the newsgroup search other
than references to vba code. Is there something I should be doing to avoid
this problem?

OS X 10.2.8, 800mhz G3 iBook, Excel versions 9.0.4 & 11.1.0.

This is very strange (as in, I can't reproduce it...).

Are you using the default template to start a new workbook? Or do you
have a file named "Workbook" (no quotes, no extension) in your Microsoft
Office 2004:Office:Startup:Excel folder?

If the latter, what happens if you move that file to the desktop and
start a new workbook?

If you're using the default, try, with XL closed, renaming or deleting
these preference files (~:Library:preferences:Microsoft folder, where ~
is your home directory):

com.microsoft.Excel.prefs.plist
com.micoosoft.Office.prefs.plist
Office Font Cache (11)

Empty the trash if you deleted them, and restart XL. Any change?

The only other thing I can think of would be to check for a corrupt font
(see

http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/troubleshooting.html

for more), but I think it's unlikely that it would show up this way.

Thank you, John. I knew this would be strange since it hasn't come up
before in this group.

I started without a template; only the (font) settings in Excel preferences;
which I¹ve changed a few times as I continue to grope.

I have nothing in the startup folders.

I had already deleted the cache & plist files (and any others with office or
excel in their name) to no avail. I would have expected a corrupted font
problem to also be revealed in other applications, but will pursue that
avenue. I have run the demo of Font Doctor and no problems were found in
any of the font folders for the fonts in question. I also ran the delete
font caches routine. Yet the problem continues. By any chance could
duplicate fonts (i.e. In the different libraries) have any effect?

It's possible. I know there are problems with fonts that bomb Office
which Font Doctor thinks are just ducky. Fonts are mostly a mystery to
me, in any case, but I know how to do a binary search...
