Header box missing in Page Layout view

Byron Spoon

Somehow I caused the document header box to vanish and I can't bring it
back.

Footer box is visible in the Page Layout view but not the header box.

When I click the "Switch between header and footer" icon in the
Header/Footer toolbar it just keeps pointing back to the same footer again.

Any ideas how to get a header box to reappear so I can title my pages? I¹ve
exhausted my bag of tricks.

I'm running on Mac OS X v10.4.6 and MS Word v11.2.

Thanks in advance for your help out there.

Hi Byron:

The only way the Header Story (to give it its correct title) can vanish in
such a way that View>Header and Footer can't bring it back is if the
document internal structure were to be so badly damaged as to be
unrecoverable.

Chances are it's there, but you just can't "see" it.

Go to File:page Setup and check Layout: Different Odd and Even and Different
First Page. That enables all three headers per section.

Now go to View>Header and Footer. The first time you go there, you are in
the Header by default. Choose Format>Paragraph and make sure the line
height is not set to something tiny. Go to Format Font and ensure that
"Hidden" is not checked.

If it really has "Gone" you will have to Maggie the document: Create a new
blank document, copy all EXCEPT the last paragraph mark, and paste into the
new document.

That will replace the default section break and re-enable the headers.

Cheers

John-
Thanks for your guidance regarding my missing header problem. FYI here's
status now that I have all headers back again.

Doing the selections you indicated, it turns out that only the Odd page
Header "dashed line boxes" (i.e. Header "story") were missing. Headers were
there for First pages of sections, Even pages of sections, and ALL Footers.

The line heights were ok and hidden was NOT checked.

Well to simplify things I then removed ALL section breaks from the document,
replacing them with page breaks, just to make it easier to analyze the
problem.

Some quirks that I observed...
When I switched from header to footer, control jumped to the footer on that
page and the "Switch Between Header & Footer" icon became backlit as
expected. But clicking the icon again to go back to the header had no
effect and control remained at the same footer and the icon remained
backlit. I.e., I was unable to get to the (missing) header on odd numbered
pages.

However, on the first page and on even numbered pages, switching from header
to footer and back again worked just fine as expected since both the header
and the footer "boxes" were visible.

So now defeated, I ended up creating a new blank document and copying the
contents of the original document into the new document, minus the last
couple of lines, per your last suggestion. I had to do this in chunks
because he document is some 30MB large with embedded pictures etc.

I was worried I'd lose my endnotes and endnote cross-references (another 20
pages of text), but they appear to have transferred just fine. That's a
miracle! Except they were now numbered in roman numerals. But I entered a
new dummy endnote and selected it to be formatted as arabic numbers, then
deleted it. Lo and behold ALL my endnote numbers and cross reference numbers
converted to arabic. Success. I think I'm back in business.

Thanks again.

Hi Byron:

Well done! That is great analysis and good persistence.

And yes, we were right, the internal structure of that document was totally
corrupted. The problem was in the "last" section break, by the sound of it
(which is where it often is...)

That's why the weird endnote numbering: that was involved with the
corruption.

You should be good to go now :)

Cheers
