Header, footer not showing when Word starts

I have templates that make use of headers and footers for name, date, etc..
Recently, however, every time Word starts, it does not show the entire page
with the header and footer. The only way I can show that part is by going to
[view] and [header / footer]. This selects that text and increases the range
of my page view. But for documents where I don't want stuff up there, aka
Normal.dot by default, Word still does not show my header / footer area.

The first bit of the page I can see is where my text cursor is. It's worked
fine for a year, and just started doing these strange things.

Word XP, Student edition

Any ideas?

You have (without knowing) found the HideWhiteSpace option. Move the mouse
slowly over the area between page break and watch the mouse pointer change.
Click when it changes and hey presto!

Or it could be that the OP is in Normal view.
