i have documents that require a reference number to be entered into the
footer of every page including new pages added. its just a 3 digit reference
but theres quite a few pages and a lot of documents.

is there a way to do this without having to add it to the bottom of each and
every page maually?

The magic word here is "Footer".

Menu: View > Header and Footer (or similar)

By default, it displays the Header; there's a button to swap to the
Footer. Set this up the way you want it (use Fields to refer to, say
Document properties) and it will be retained throughout the
document.

Beware of Section breaks; these can confuse the Header/Footers.

yes, i tried that first of all - its just that the footer was listed on a
few pages but then not on the rest ... when i view the footer or header it
shows section 1 or section 2 - this particular test document has 13 sections
and the others all seem to have lots of sections .... any way around having
to enter it multiple times?

Set each footer to be "Same as Previous".
