Header formatting in LINKed docs not working

D

Dennis

I have a series of Word docs that I'm LINKing to a "master"
document. Each of these smaller docs has it's own header.
The header has an AUTOSHAPE (line) drawn under the text in
the header. Additionally, the header text is formatted to
span the entire top of the doc, from left to right margins.
When I print the master doc, the headers are messed up. The
autoshape is gone, and the text no longer spans the top of
the page. Below is a crude representation the issue:

Page -

-----------------------------
header text rt side

hdr line2 rt side
_______ (autoshape here) ____
--- END OF HEADER ---

text here...

..
..
..
_____________________________

Again, in the LINKed SOURCE doc, the header appears (and
prints) normally, but in the "master" doc (no, I'm not
using a Word Master doc; I'm just using the TERM), the
underline is missing, and the header RT SIDE text is not on
the right side of the header, as follows:

Page -

-----------------------------
header text rt side

hdr line2 rt side

--- END OF HEADER ---

text here...

..
..
..
_____________________________

There is a SINGLE TAB in the LINKed source header, between
the left and right side text portions. This single tab
effectively places the "rt side" text aligned on the right
margin of the document. But not when I view/print the "master".

Any assistance you can provide would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Dennis,

Well, are you certain the headers are all being imported
through the link? HOW are you making the link?

syntax is:

LINK Word.Document.8 <path and filename here> \a \f 0 \p

There are no headers in the "master" document. Only LINKs.
And the headers DO show up; just not the autoshape, nor the
correct formatting of the header text.

Thanks

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Sorry for getting back to you so late. My hind-brain has been
struggling with this, trying to fill in the gaps in the
information.
LINK Word.Document.8 <path and filename here> \a \f 0 \p
1. If you use a LINK field to insert a document object into
another document the headers and footers (as in View/Header
and Footer) will be supressed. The only things that might
show are Drawing Objects that expand beyond the set
header/footer area. (I just tested again, so I'm sure)

2. A document object can't display more than a single page
(the first), nor can it break across to another page. So it
wouldn't need headers/footers.

3. This being the case, I can't figure out exactly how you're
setting this up, nor how you expect it to work / what you
need. From your original description, I would have expected
you'd use Insert/File, which generates an IncludeText field.
There are no headers in the "master" document. Only LINKs.
And the headers DO show up; just not the autoshape, nor the
correct formatting of the header text.
