Header margin and page margin

Can the page margin and the header margin be the same measurement?
For example, will problems occur if I set the page margin to 1" and
the header margin to 1" as well?

Hi Samantha

If you have a header, then under normal circumstances what will happen is
that the header will have the 1" margin (distance from edge) you specify,
but the text will be pushed further down the page to make space for the
header.

If you don't have a header (not even the blank paragraph mark) then the
header distance from edge won't have any effect anyway.

Either way, specifying the same measurement doesn't seem very logical - what
are you trying to achieve?

Well the header of the document (or any text for that matter) can't be
in the top 1" margin of the page. So I just changed the header margin
to move that down and then I never changed the top margin just because
it didn't look like I needed to. I guess I wouldn't know what to
change it to because the information that is in the header could vary.
What could you suggest? Thanks!!

The header *is* in the top margin by default. If you mean that you are
required to have a 1" header margin, then that's a different thing (albeit
weird). If you're always going to have a header, and it's going to vary in
depth, then the important thing is the space between the header and the
document body. Here you have two choices: you can leave the top margin at 1"
and assure that there is uniform space between header and body by using the
Space After setting on the Header style, or you can assure a uniform top
margin by setting the top margin to something greater than 1" that would be
enough to clear the deepest header.

I'm wondering, though, if you're confusing headers and headings.

No, I'm not confusing headings and headers. I work for a intellectual
property law firm. The courts have extremely strict rules for the
documents that you submit. For this particular template, you cannot
have ANY text in the top 1" of the sheet. This is because that space
is reserved for labels. That's why even the header cannot be in the
top 1" of any page.

In any case, that is what I have been doing, I have left the top
margin at 1" and then modified the header style to include space after
the paragraph. This has worked except for in one instance one of the
users was having difficulty with it not printing correctly. The
document did print correctly to other printers though so I am assuming
it is due to an outdated printer driver.
