Header on first page only

I want to set up a template for personal letter stationery which has my
return address information in the first page header only. No matter what I
try, I either get the header showing up on every page or on alternating
pages. I've used that little tool that says "1st page only", but it doesn't
seem to work. Can someone give me a simple step-by-step on this ?

Related -- in the template I set up (and which is not the way I thought it
would be) -- I based it on the "elegant letter" template and saved it with a
new name and .dot extension in the my templates folder. I then opened that
template to create a new document. When I closed that document (not
template) I got a message asking if I wanted to save the changes to the
elegant letter template --- huh??????????

OK, Go to the first page of your template and select view->header and
footer. (You might want to be in page view to have it come out like I'm
describing)
You will see a dashed rectangle labelled Header or First Page Header.
You will also see a toolbar leap out of nowhere and obscure your work.
One of the icons on that little sucker has a piece of cheese labelled
'1' trying to escape from a sandwich. If you have tooltips prefs on (a
good idea for this exercise) you will see that it is called "Different
First Page". See what happens to the header rectangle label when you
toggle it off an on.
Next to it is "Different Odd and Even Pages" Guess what's causing your
heading to show up on alternating pages?

For bonus points, experiment with creating section breaks with new
page. With and without "Same as Previous"

Two possible reasons.
1. You changed one of its styles while working on the document.
2. You still had the save document as template selected.

Persevere with this. You will find that what you are trying to do is an
excellent way to churn out letters. For many years I have avoided
having printed letterheads for my business. Everyone here uses a word
template just like that.

Actually we take it a lot further. A fair sized excel spreadsheet holds
all my contact data. The letter templates use it as data merge source.

I have a similar envelope template, does logo, return address and
addressee all in one pass on blank stationery.

Hi John:

Elliott is going about this one way, I will give you the other: use
whichever you prefer:

1. Go to Format>Document>Layout
2. Check Different First Page and Different Odd and Even
3. OK that and insert three page breaks in the document. (We take these out
later: we must ³have² three pages in order to be able to see all the
headers).
4. Go to the first page, then View>Header Footer
5. Select All in the deader you are in and Delete
6. On the little floating toolbar that pops up, press Show Next, and delete
the next header. Do this once more. There are First, Left and Right
headers in the document: you want to delete all three.
7. Now on the toolbar, deselect the Different Odd and Even headers but NOT
the Different First Page
8. Now use Show Previous to get back to the First header
9. Place your letter head there
10. Click Close and Save

You¹re done.

A document has potentially three headers and three footers in each section.
However, the settings of the Different First Page and Different Odd and Even
checkboxes determine which ones will show or print. However, because of the
ability to make each header and footer ³Same as previous² (which is also on
the Header/Footer toolbar) you can end up changing a header that is not
shown and having the change roll forward to one that is.

The reason you are getting strange results is because you were changing one
of the ones that does not print and not finding the one that does.

Hope this helps
