header sizing problem

Gwen

I have Word 2002 and am attempting to format my thesis so
this problem is becoming very large, very fast - I needed
different types of numbering on different sections of my
document, I got that figured out however, after I got the
pages in the footer, a header problem arose - I have no
information in any header and haven't had any information
in any header. On pages 2, 4, 74 and 85 (currently
anyway) I have a three inch header that I cannot get to go
to normal size. A friend with an older version of word
took my document, and went to format, document, layout,
and then align center and all the header problems went
away. Now however, when I am back working on my machine,
randomly another page will go to a three inch header
forcing the wording down half a page. I have tried to
drag the margin of the header up - when I do that it
automatically falls back to 3 inches. I have tried to
reset the header in page setup under the header/footer bar
and it automatically goes back to three inches. Now that
it has happened in ths one document, I am having trouble
with it happening, randomly, when I attempt to start other
new documents. PLEASE advise I am at my wits end and the
formatting cannot stray from standard on any page of this
particular document.

You need the vertical alignment set to Top, not Center, on the Layout tab of
Page Setup. Also, display nonprinting characters to make sure you don't have
any extra, empty paragraphs in the header.

Make sure your entire document is Vertically aligned at
the Top. File/Page Setup/Layout tab/Vertical alignment.
