header spacing in Word 2004 problem

I have a couple of documents that are messing up the header heights.
They get progressively larger on each page. I've opened the header/
footer tool and tried to manually correct them, but it just doesn't work,
it either ignores it or drastically changes the height to nothing or
almost as large as the page. I thought maybe a virus, but that's not it.
Any ideas?

A guess...under Format | Document, Layout tab, make sure the Vertical
Alignment is set to Top.
