Word 2002, Win XP
How can I type a title of a report and have it automatically appear in the
page headers of each section. Does this involve the use of fields? If so,
how do you do it?

I would format the title using the Title style. Then in the header, use a
StyleRef field to pick it up. This way, if you change the title, the headers
will also be changed.

Use a style (e.g Title style) for your Report title. Then in the Header use
a StyleRef field to pick up the paragraph text of the Title style.
