I can not seem to get the correct pagination when I use the header/footer function. When I click "insert page number" it posts #3 when it is page #2. And, it does not seem to go beyond one page. I have tried everything to figure this out, but, alas, to no avail.

It sounds like you have some section breaks in your document, perhaps an
Odd or Even Page Section Break, and perhaps have also turned on first
page headers. (Changing margins or columns automatically inserts
section breaks to do so)

Go into View | Draft so that it will show you the section breaks. What
is there?

Describe your document a little so that we can help you decide whether
section breaks are necessary.

Also, if you are using Insert | Page Number, avoid it in the future.
Instead, View | Header/Footer. The header/footer will be labeled so that
you can tell what you are doing, and when the cursor is in the
header/footer, the Formatting Palette will offer a # icon to insert a
page number. If you are already doing that, then tell us what the
labels are on the header.

How do I remove an extra section (2) with all the extra pages? One page in the unwanted section has content, and I want to keep that page, but it isn't showing a page number. This is such a mess - help! I have no idea how this happened. And where exactly is the formatting pallet with the icon for inserting a page number? ( I placed the cursor in the header as directed) Thanks for any advice to save my project!

Hi Carrie:

Relax! There's nothing much wrong :)

First: Make a copy of your document so you can try a few things.

Now: Delete the section breaks that are separating the material. This will
instantly apply the margins from the section below to the text: if that
looks bad, throw that copy away and start again.

To remove text, select it and press Delete. Select the pages you want to
delete and just delete them. It makes no difference whether they have page
numbers or not: Word will adjust the page numbers to suit.

To add a page number (to the Footer or wherever) click in the footer then
use Insert>Page Number. If the button is gone, we'll deal with that later.

If Insert>Page Numbers... Is gone too, you can use Insert>Field>PAGE...

Now have a look: What more do you need to do? Please ask.

Hope this helps
