headers and footers in Word 2003

When I open a new document or template in Word, the headers and footers are
not visible. I have to manually select H&F from View to bring them up, then
close the option for them to appear on screen.

This is annoying, more so as I bought a new Office Pro disk when I purchased
my new computer last August. I did not expect the software to fail so soon.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I have looked at the Microsoft
website for solutions without success and don't see why I should pay for
support for a relatively new version of the product.

Shall be grateful for views/solutions.

You have toggled on the Hide White Space option. Look under the View menu.
