Headers/Footers

I am trying to delete the headers and footers in a
document. When I select the text in in the header or
footer and hit delete , the text disappears but not the
header or footer itself. Therefore I cannot make my
margins bigger. How do you make the actual header
disappear?

The areas for the header and footer will always be there,
even if there's nothing in them. You change the size of
those areas as well as all your other margins under
File/Page Setup.

It looks that way however, when I try to change the
margins a message comes up that it is out of the print
area. It seems to me that if I didn't have the header
there in the first place, there should be some way to
change my mind. Any ideas?

Change the header/footer margin until it's within the printable area. But
note that this message is often erroneous and triggered by a
miscommunication between Word and the printer driver.
