Headers?

Nathaniel

Hello,

Can someone here explain how I change the headers at the top of an Excel
worksheet from "A,B,C, etc." to custom names? I need to set up a CSV list,
and it won't import properly unless I can add in fields like 'first name,' 'last
name,' etc.

Thanks!

You can't change the headers - they're either A,B,C, or 1,2,3 (depending
on the status of the Preferences/General/R1C1 References checkbox).

You can certainly import CSV without changing headers - perhaps with a
bit more information we can give you the assistance you need.

Hi Nathaniel,

Excel recognizes the first row of any list or range of contiguous rows and
columns as the header row.

A table can be anywhere on a worksheet, and you can have as many tables as
will fit on any worksheet. That being said, I get confused if there is more
than one or two tables on a worksheet, so I tend to keep one table per
worksheet.

If you turn on the List manager (View > Toolbars > List) and turn it on
you'll see what I mean about how Excel (and just about every other database)
interprets row and column data. The first row and only the first row is
always the headers. All subsequent rows are rows of data. The first empty
row is the demarcation of the end of the table. Empty columns demarks the
other borders for the end of the table. Merged cells are not allowed, and
headers can never be more than a single row.

The column letters and row numbers are just there for you to reference
cells. The actual table is within the worksheet range.
