Heading 1 does not change (increase/progression)

I've created my outline numbering but Heading 1, which displays correctly as
"A" the first time, does not progress/change to "B", or "C", etc, the next
time I apply "heading 1." The "Restart numbering after" (in the Customize
Outline Numbering, under Modify Style is "invisible"/gray: I ought to check
THAT, but there's no way I can...
How can I solve this?

If Heading 1 is Level 1, as it should be, then there is no higher level for
it to restart after, so that's not an issue. You wouldn't want it checked,
anyway, as that's already your problem: you want it to continue numbering,
not restart. Check to make sure that the A in your numbering is actually a
number field (should be in a grey rectangle in the "Number format" box and
not just typed in.
