Heading 1 = Roman numeral, Heading 2 = 1.1

Word 2002 SP3

I have been trying to set up styles to do the following headings:

I. = Heading 1
1.1 = Heading 2
1.1.1 = Heading 3

I can't seem to separate Heading 2 from Heading 1. Heading 2 either becomes
I.1 or if I modify the number by hand, it doesn't update.
Does anybody have any idea wether it is possible to create the above
Headings. And if it is not possible, does anybody have a trick to get around
the problem?

Thanks!

Suzanne, thank you for this and sorry it took so long to get back to you. It
resolved the problem but now I am having problems with the Levels. It does
everything fine until 1.1.1.1. When I get that far it doesn't show me the
previous levels so won't add the numbers.

Any ideas?
Thanks again,
Tanya

If you started with one of the outline numbering formats that use 1, 1.1,
1.1.1, etc., you should be good up to nine levels, and if you used the
format that shows Heading 1, Heading 2, etc., your levels should already be
linked to styles. It may be easiest to start from scratch with your
numbering (be sure you follow the steps at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html), but at any
given level in an outline-numbered list, the Outline Numbered dialog should
show all the previous levels when you click the arrow beside the "Previous
level number" box, so you can insert them manually, along with the desired
punctuation.

I followed the instructions to the letter (I hope!) but now I'm having the
problem that its not restarting the numbering. I've tried doing 'restart
numbering after level 3 (if I'm dealing with Level 4 for example) but it
doesn't update. Can't figure out what I'm going wrong or what I haven't done.

ps it still doesn't show me the previous level 5 but fortunately I don't
have many 1.1.1.1's

One other question - is it possible to set the Headings to title case? I've
managed to do All Caps or no caps but not Title Case.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, I don't know what your problem could be, as I've never had this
happen. If you'd like to send me a sample doc, I'll take a look.

Unfortunately, no, Title Case is not an option.

Susanne, I think its a refresh problem. I went back into Heading 1 and
repeated the settings for all the levels various times and it eventually got
it right, that is why I presume it is a refresh problem because I didn't
actually change anything - just went back into every level from Heading 1
down.
The document is very long. At the moment I seem to have managed to fiddle
it, even though I know that is not the best way to do things. My deadline is
Monday so by now, fiddling is ok!
Thanks for your attention and I hope I won't be bothering you again.
