Heading Numbering Vs Paragraph Numbering

Casey Allen

Hi all,

I have documents whereby each paragrah of text needs to be numbered along
with each heading. e.g:

1 [Heading 1] INTRODUCTION
1.1 [Heading 2] Purpose
1.1.1 [Paragraph 3] This is some paragraph text,
blah, blah, blah.
1.1.2 [Paragraph 3] This is some paragraph text,
blah, blah, blah.

1.2 [Heading 2] Overview
1.2.1 [Paragraph 3] Note that this para number has restarted
because I have inserted a higher
level heading.

2 [Heading 1] REFERENCES
2.1 [Paragraph 2] Note that this para number has restarted
because I have inserted a higher
level heading.
2.1 [Paragraph 2] This para number continues from the prev
para 2 level.
etc, etc...

Is it possible in Word 97 to set up Heading levels and paragraph levels as
would be seen above. i.e:

Heading 1: 1
Heading 2: 1.1
Heading 3: 1.1.1
....

as well as

Paragraph 1: 1
Paragraph 2: 1.1
Paragraph 3: 1.1.1
....

and have it so that If I insert a higher level heading, the next paragraph
numbering will be restarted? From what I can tell, the heading list and the
para list will be numbered completely separate from each other. Is there
another way around this?

thanks
Casey
