heading styles showing (symbols)

hi all,

I'm perplexed. i installed some true type fonts and applied them to
various styles in Microsoft Word 2003. No problem. However, some of the
styles (specifically, Heading 1, 2, 3, etc., in the Styles and
Formatting pane) show up as Heading 1 (symbol). (I'm not sure why

when I apply those styles to a sentence that is longer than the width
of the page, the sentence breaks a word at any point (not at the normal
hyphen point). for example, i'll see:

any clues on how to fix this?
