Heading Styles

If I want to put chapter titles in a header or footer, then I have to have
them in a heading style. Obviously this applies to "Heading 1" etc., but is
there any way that I can designate a style of my own creation as a heading
style?

Thanks in advance,

Jasper Kent.

Margaret,

I don't think that STYLEREF is what I want, since it only displays text if
the style occurs on the current page. Thus, the chapter title appears in the
header for the first page of the chapter, but not for subsequent pages.

Hi Jasper

I think you've misunderstood the action of the field and the problem you are
seeing.

Styleref will give you the value of the (by default) last paragraph of a
particular style (there are a number of other options, but that will be what
you want). It is the normal way of achieving 'running headers' of the
chapter or section titles.

If you are only seeing the chapter title on the first page, I suspect it is
because you have a 'Different first page' layout, and you haven't included
StyleRef in the other headers for the section.

Nope.

I don't have "different first page" checked. If I view field codes, I can
see the STYLEREF code in all my headers, but if I switch to view results, I
get no results other than for the first header of the section.

Section? Does this document have sections?
If you expect a header to cross a section break it must be set 'Same as
previous'.
STYLEREF in the header will display the content of the first style of its
type on the page (you can choose the last style of this type on the page if
you prefer), until a section break without the above parameter; or the
content of the style changes, when it will show the updated information.

OK, then another possibility is that you have a blank paragraph in the same
style you use for the Chapter title somewhere.

Or maybe you have additional section breaks, with different headers and
footers set? I see you mention continuous section breaks in another post,
and this might be the cause of the problem. But you should be able to see
this from your header view, I think - make sure you see a header for every
section in number order, and they all have the StyleRef field in place.
