Headins and Table of Contents

S

Steve Hayes

I have a student's doctoral thesis, which I am trying to help him format for
printing.

It has been bac and forth through various format conversions, with the result
that the index got lost, but I am trying to rescue the Table of contents.

The trouble is there are now several styles

Heading 1
Heading 1
heading 1

I created a new style called ChapterText and tried to convert all the Chapter
headings to that, and made that Level 1, with all the Heading ! styles being
"Body Text" level.

But the TOC still prints the Heading 1 styles, but does not print the
ChapterText style.

Is there anything I can do, other than delete al the heading styles and start
again?

You cannot demote the built-in Heading 1 style to Body Text level, but you
can omit it from the TOC by removing the 1 beside it in the TOC Options
dialog. I suspect you might find it more satisfactory to apply the built-in
style (if you can ascertain which one it is) to the headings instead of
making up a new style, but you can still manage as you're doing. If you have
in fact defined the Chapter Text style as Level 1 (in the Paragraph dialog),
then it should show up in the TOC Options marked with a 1 if you have the
box for "Outline levels" checked; even if it does not, you can add a 1.
