Help a Senior with Word?

Hello

I installed Word and Excel parts of Office XP. I also had WinFax
installed.

Winfax wasn't working so good, so I deleted it and use a different fax
program now.

Trouble is, when I open Word, I get an error box that says:
"MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC" in the bar at the top. The message says
"Compile Error in Hidden Module: WinFaxPrintAndMerge"

I did a search on the word 'WinFax' and didn't find anything.

I did a 'regedit' and deleted all references to winfax.

I removed Office XP (which I didn't like as much anyway), and
re-installed Office 2000 (which is easier for an old-timer like me to
understand and use).

I STILL get that damned error message box.

If I click 'OK' the box goes away and I can proceed normally, but it
is a pain in my bony old butt.

Can any of you young whipper-snappers offer any suggestions?

Did you actually uninstall WinFax via Add/Remove programs - rather
than just deleting the folder and its contents? If not, you may have
to reinstall WinFax, then Remove via Add/Remove programs. That would
be a first step. But if you've already done that (and, in fact, even
if you haven't), please see below!

I'm not so young - and I haven't used WinFax for many years! But you
might check Tools->Templates and Add-Ins. If you see
WinFaxPrintAndMerge there whether it is checked or not, take a look at
the location. It will probably show something along the lines of
C:\...\STARTUP\WinFaxPrintAndMerge.dot

To get the full path, close Templates and Add-Ins, then Select
Tools->Options->File Locations. Click on Startup, then click the
Modify button to see the full path. It will probably be something
along the lines of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\STARTUP

Make a note of the full path, then close Word. Then, using Windows
Explorer or My Computer (or whatever file manager you prefer),
navigate to the Startup folder and delete WinFaxPrintAndMerge.dot
(and/or anything else you see that refers to WinFax)

When you next start Word, with any luck, this annoying problem will
have disappeared!

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Hillary.

I found a .dot file there that started WF..... That was a clue that it
probably was the file that had something to do with WinFax. I
renamed the .dot to .dotty, so I could put it back if I needed to
then rebooted. Then when I re-opened WORD the annoying message box
was gone.

Thank you again for your advice. Now I'll go and move that .dotty to
the potty.

Much appreciated.
