HELP... Automatically formats entire document when I don't want it to.

Problem:When I highlight a section of text to change the font or point
size -of that section only- the entire document changes to the new size
or font. I cannot find an auto formatting option to change this, I've
been searching each window for an hour now. I imagine there is a simple
solution and I just can't find it!

Help!
