HELP: Backed up data

I backed up folders and files from my hard drive using Nero 6 but when I come
to open the files the data is all messed up and unreadable.
Is there any recovery program that can restore these word and excel files back
to their original useable/readable condition?

Backed up; do you mean copied or used a backup app?
Backed up to cd via pkt write or copy?

Copied from HD to DVDR using Nero 6 program.
The DVDR is full of all the files I copied onto it BUT the contents are all
mixed up and unreadable.

I seem to recall that when you use Nero's backup function, the resulting
files are in a compressed format that you have to uncompress with the
Nero software before you can access them with the application that
created the original files.
