Help - Cannot turn off picture caption numbering

When I try to place a caption on a picture MS-Word 2000 (all updates
installed) insists upon begining the caption with "Figure 1", etc.

When I select Insert/Caption and click on AutoCaption all of the boxes are
unchecked. I have tried checking them & clicking OK and then unchecking
them and clicking OK without success.

How can I turn off the automatic unmbering. I want only text I provide to
display.
