HELP!!! Can't get Word to read my Excel spreadsheet in a data merge

L

Lisa

I'm trying to make labels in Word using my Excel spreadsheet, but
every time I get to the "Get Data"\"Open Data Source" & select my file
-- a basic .xls file -- I get a "Convert File" window. None of the
choices (the usual text only, MS-DOS text, RTF, HTML, or unicode text
options are listed) work, & it's obvious that Word sees the Excel data
as garbage. The Excel worksheet opens fine & doesn't seem to be
contaminated.

I have tried copying the Excel file to a new spreadsheet & even
copying the Excel data into Word & then recopying it back to Excel. I
keep getting the same "Convert File" window.

I am using Word X & Excel X for Mac on my eMac.

Does anyone have any suggestions??? This is VERY frustrating!

Thank you!!

As a workaround I'd guess copying your data into Word (in a table format is
usually best unless you have more than the maximum number of columns (63/64)
then using that as a data source would get you through the current merge.

Does this happen with any spreadsheet you try to use as a data source, just
this one, or what?

In addition to Peter's questions:

Is your version of Mac OS fully updated (10.3.9 or 10.4.8)?
Is Office X fully updated (10.1.9)?
Have you tried running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions?

If the answer to any of the above is "No", do them first in the order
indicated.
