help - computer locks up - Office XP apps

Hi, hope someone can help with this problem.

This happens in a lot of different situations, for example when I do a Save
As, or Insert or Open command.

When a daughter window opens so I can navigate to the correct folder by
clicking on the arrow at the top of the daughter window, immediately to the
right of the pull-down area (e.g. where it says "Look In..." or "Save As...",
the program locks-up. This happens in Word 2002 and Excel 2002. I also have
the same problem when I try to insert a file or image in a Word document. (I
found a workaround, but it is very inconvenient - I can click on the icon to
the right that is the yellow folder with an arrow on it to browse).

Is this an Office problem or a Windows problem, and how do I fix it? I
tried repairing Office XP, and it didn't fix it. The only other change I've
made to the computer recently is that I defragged it and also installed VPN
and VSS software.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be immensely appreciated! Thanks.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
