Help configure Outlook 2003 with Verizon DSL email

I cannot get outlook 2003, or outlook express to work with
incoming.verizon.net or outgoing.verizon.net. The accounts work fine thru
the web interface. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Have you followed ALL of Verizon.net's instructions? Does Verizon require
authentication to their servers?

Yes. In fact I've tried the setup on different machines with different
routers too. The consistent message is "outlook is unable to connect to your
outgoing SMTP server. Verizon insists the proper language is
outgoing.verizon.net, and they will offer no further help with this
"software" issue. I connect using Verizons web based email just fine, so I
know the name/password is okay. Incoming mail is received just fine. They
do require authentication, and that box is checked. I've even tried
inserting the name and password on that screen with no luck. Argh!

Do you get an error message when you try to send, and if so, what is it
(exact text please)?

Task Verizon-Sending reported error 0x8004210B. The operation timed out
waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or your Internet
service provider.

This message takes longer to show up if I increase the Advanced- Server
Timeouts setup tab. Regardless, I never connect with the SMTP server.

The following MSKB article specificially mentions that error code and may
help you troubleshoot the error: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514
