HELP File Problems after Office Update

M

MWE

I am running Office2000 under WinXP Pro. After recently
updating to Office2000 SP3, I noticed a big change to HELP
in all Office appls: Whenever I access Help it takes 20
to 30 seconds for the Help stuff to load and it seems like
the entire HELP system is starting "from scratch". This
happens each time I access HELP even during the same appl
session. I have heard that some security-related updates
have messed up the Office HELP system, but can not find
anything in the MSKB quite like my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Hallo NG,

I am facing a similar problem. Same constellation, just German system (XP
Pro, Office 2000 with all Updates up to SP3).

Besides that it recently takes very long to open the HELP as described above
I am facing the problem described in this article "Office Help - Popup Help
does not appear " in nearly all office programs (but
FrontPage and Publisher, these 2 do not use Popup Help Links, neither in
Windows Help and Support, here these links do work!):

http://groups.google.de/groups?hl=d...=word+javascript+help+popup&sa=N&tab=wg&meta=

Proposed solution by Beth (my conclusion out of this article):

The pop-ups were disabled due to a security flaw.

However at your discretion you can replace Ouactrl.ocx with an earlier
version (on the installation CD) and it should return Help to the way it
was before the patch.

Do note that doing so may leave you vulnerable.

This is how I actually reached in this NG (coming from my german NG where
this topic apparently is hardly known).

My questions now:
- how actual is this information (the date was 2002-11-11)?
- Is this still recommended?
- Is it the only way how to solve the problem?
- What am I gonna get then? The old help from the installation CD? Or will
this just fix the way how the help is being
accessed but with the new help topics from the updates?
- What exactly am I running into by trying this? What are the risks for me
securitywise?
- Can Symantec - Norton AV have something to do with it?

Thanks a lot for helping me!!!
