Help: file received through Outlook 2003 split into two .dat files

Hey folks, I'm having a problem with an email I just received. It was sent
to me with an attachment (a .doc file) as a single email. However, when it
arrived in my outlook mailbox it was two emails.

Neither email had any body text, but both had attachments which were the
name of the file like this "Re_ (subject line of email)(file name).doc [2_2]
(filename).doc [1_2].dat" Because I am an attorney, I have redacted the
subject line of the email and the name of the file. The parentheses and
their contents are representative text. However, the brackets and their text
are exactly as they appear.

I've tried opening the files in notepad, wordpad, word, and wordperfect.
The most I've gotten is the information from the email (who sent it, when
they sent it, the subject line, the body of the email), but the attachment is
just gibberish.

Is there anyway for me to recover this file in this form?
