Help! Frontpage 2003, each word on a new line!!?!!?

Carolyn K.

I write a large website in FP 2003, for years now. I last edited the pages
in question a week or two ago, and today when I opened one, the page appeared
with the top and left margins as normal, but the content was spaced in a
column against the left edge, so that each word appears on a new line, thus:

Smart
Word
Games

Word
games
are
NOT
all
the
same!

Find
word
and
letter
games

and so on... This only happens on a specific set of pages, including
www.hoagiesgifted.org/smart_word_games.htm
www.hoagiesgifted.org/smart_party_games.htm etc. The only thing these pages
have in common, that's different from other pages, is that about 1 paragraph
in they have a special link bar (which was horizontal, but now appears one
button per line...)

So far, the publisher version is still OK, with normal paragraphs and
spacing. But I cannot edit this way. Help!!
I copied the <head> section

When I realized (typing this message) that the link bar was the only common
feature... I went back to FP and deleted the link bar in one of the pages,
and Voila! the problem is solved. But I *want* that link bar in the pages!!

I tried adding back a new link bar, but have the same result - the words all
line up, one word per line, on the left of the page.

Help!!

I'm not seeing the abbynormal behaviour..the page looks as you described it.
Try refreshing your browser and/or clearing your cache.

That's what I tried to say (albeit not very clearly). It looks this way in
FP, when I'm trying to edit it, but it's fine upon publication. This started
this week, and when I checked for FP or Office updates, I found that Service
Pack 3 for Office had installed on my PC 8 days ago. I checked the list of
updates in SP3 for Office, and found a FP update was included, but I haven't
been able to tell if something in there affected me. Well, clearly it DID
affect me, but...

I found a work-around. I can delete the Link Bar from the page (it's the
one in-line, with the various other Toys pages listed, NOT the one in the
left margin), edit it normally, and then reinsert the link bar before I save
and publish. Annoying, but not as annoying as trying to edit it while it's
got one word on each line!

I'd really love to find an easier work-around, or better still, a solution.
Thanks.

You seem to have those pages. No problems in IE7.

Huh? Please reread my posts. I didn't say the pages were missing, I said
the it is nearly impossible to edit them in FP because FP has suddenly
started trashing any page that has an in-line navigation bar within it (not
in a border) as a string of words, one on each line:
Smart
Word
Games

Word
games
are
NOT
all
the
same!

Find
word
and
letter
games

This started just after my PC automatically installed the Office Service
Pack three last week (SP3).

Please help!

That type of behavior can be produced by excessive use of "blockquote",
right or left alignment, and an illogical table structure.

Check the HTML view for the first two, usually the same tag repeated over
and over again is a bad sign.

Try removing all alignment related formatting on the misplaced words and see
if that makes any difference.

For the table thing, remember table properties will let you put in any
number you want, but if the cells are 1% and 99%, and your text is in the 1%
cell it will mash the text to try to "fit" in the cell. So make sure you
are not mistaking or mixing pixels with percents in that table, and make
sure the values make sense.

Don't forget to check include bots and shared borders when you look for
illogical tables.

Also, try getting the FP cleaner program.
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm

It has a handy button tool to clear out cache related to FrontPage on your
computer.

Lastly, if it's just two pagses, make backup copies, start with a WORKING
page (any other one that looks the same) and paste the text and so on in the
new file. Sometimes finding a problem is a waste of time when you can just
rebuild it in a few minutes of copying and pasting anyway.

It's not 2 pages, it's 12. And there's no excessive formatting, no tables
(except the one created by FP during publish, to include the top and left
borders). There is a <dl> definition list (one), but it begins well after
the problem. The navigation bar that causes the problem appears at the top
of the page, following a <h2> header item and preceding a couple paragraphs
and a <hr> bar.

One table in the header, no table in the left border. Nothing illogical,
and those same borders are applied to over 500 pages, with no ill effects.

HTML view shows nothing amiss - no repeated tags, nothing unusual - I keep
my code pretty clean, so that the pages display well on FireFox as well as IE.

The larger frustration is... this stuff all worked a week ago, before my
computer "automagically" installed the MS Office Service pack 3 update.

I already tried recreating one of the pages, to no avail. Cut-n-paste (or
anything else) works just fine until I put the extra navigation bar in, then
BOOM - the whole page reformats to the one-word-per-column layout. And I can
delete the navigation bar, edit the page, put the bar back (try to ignore the
frighteningly distorted format) and publish, and the published version is
fine, too.

I installed and ran the FP Cleaner program, just now - thanks - and removed
all cache and SP services files... to no avail.

ARGH!!

A new symptom...

Today (and at some point yesterday, though I'm not sure when) the additional
navigation bar changed "shape" - that is, the nice graphic buttons I've
specified, which appear (albeit in a single column) in FP, appear in the
pulished site as [text] buttons!!

To repair this, and possibly all my woes, I deleted this additional nav-bar
from all of my Toys pages, and published, then came back, and recreated the
nav-bar from scratch, with a new set of buttons (ok, still the same ones, but
I changed a few names slightly).

Nope, still [text] buttons on publication, though they appear graphic in FP.
And in FP, as soon as I add this new nav-bar to each page, the page goes
into
vertical
display
mode
....

ARGH!
