Help getting different header on first page

E

Edward Lee

I'm trying to insert page numbers into a header in Word 2007. I don't want
the page number to appear on page 1.

I have created a section break between pages 1 and 2. I have checked the
option for Differnet First Page. However, when I choose to insert page
number, I get a page number on pages 1 & 2 but no other pages in the
document.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Omit the section break; "Different first page" makes it unnecessary. Then
just leave the First Page Header/Footer empty and put the page number in the
primary Header/Footer.

Thanks for the reply Suzanne. I need the first page to have different
margins than the rest of the document, thus the section break. Sorry I
didn't mention that in my first post. How can I work around this?

Thanks!

You can probably accomplish that without a section break as well. See the
"More complex letterhead" section of
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Letterhead.htm.

But if you do use a section break, then you don't want "Different first
page" because your first section is only one page, and presumably you don't
want the first page of the second section to be different. You do, however,
have to unlink the headers/footers of the two sections to leave one empty.

Unlink the section 1 and section 2 headers. Leave the section 1
header blank. Undo the different first page in the section 2 header.
Add the page number to the section 2 header as you wish.

Thanks for the reply Suzanne. I need the first page to have different
margins than the rest of the document, thus the section break. Sorry I
didn't mention that in my first post. How can I work around this?

Thanks!
