I need to figure out how to put into my paper little sub numbers for citing where I got information from. For example If I was to say:

The cartoon in the newspaper The New York Times depicted...

how could I put a little number after "the new york times". a sub number type thing not a big number that would look stupid like this: the new york times1

It depends on what's required by the authority to which you're submitting
the document or the standards to which you must hold. It can be handled
either by Footnotes, Endnotes or Citations, all of which are discussed in
Word Help. If you have any specific issues to address don't hesitate to post
back with complete details.
