Help-I can only view inserted pictures in print preview mode.

I have Word 2003, having just recently installed it. I am having trouble with
inserting picture files into a Word document. They are getting inserted but I
cannot view them on the screen until I go to print preview. Does anyone know
what the problem mignt be?
