Help! Master Project File

B

Brad

I have about 9 projects checked into Project Server. Management likes to see
them all in a single master project file, so I created a master project file
with all 9 projects inserted and published that. I also use this master
project file to control cross-project leveling.

In addition, each Monday I save a snapshot offline copy of the master
project file so we can compare the schedule on a week to week basis. The
problem I'm seeing with that is, when I open the older snapshots, they
refresh to the most current information. I therefore lose the historical
view of the schedule.

Couple of questions:

1) Is using a Master Project file to control cross-project leveling a good
strategy?

2) What's the best way to archive project server files to show a snapshot of
progress at a given time?

Thanks so much in advance!

Open the Master File and add the column "Subproject File" and you will see
less-than greater-than signs, a backslash and the name of the subprojects.
This tells the master file to point to the server. To archive it all offline:

Open the master file.
Open each subproject file individually.
Save each subproject file individually offline.
Notice the "Project Name" column now has a pathing address.
Once ALL of the subprojects are saved offline, save the master file to the
same location.

Thats all there is to it. As long as all the files remain in the same
folder together, you can even move them around. (This means you could save
them all to a new folder and .zip it for portability)
