Help me please my computer is saving my word files as read only

I am using MS Office 2003 word. Im not sure what happened but everytime I
save a file then re open it it opens in MS Word viewer. I then have to click
the file tab then open for editing. Kinda a pain in the ....... Does anyone
know how to fix this problem?
