Help me stop the automatic capital letter I

R

Ru

Hi,

I've been frustrated for years by Word's seeming inability to leave a lower
case letter 'i' alone. It automatically changes them to uppercase.

I am trying to prepare a business plan in Irish, a language where a lower
case letter 'i' means 'in' - a common word.

Is there any way to stop the ****** thing doing this?

I've tried switching the default language to another language (Irish not an
option) but it didn't work. Surely Irish is not the only language where a
lower case 'i' is meaningful...

thanks for any help that comes my way....

R.

In all these "years" you've never discovered AutoCorrect?:)

Tools> AutoCorrect, type I into the Replace: field, then select & delete the
entry from the list. You can later add it back if you wish.

I cannot stop Word 2004 from capitalising the first word in a "sentence" (actually in a table, I really don't want capital letters all over the place). I have unchecked everything in autocorrect and it still does it. Please please help me.

Hello Anny,

You should un-check the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" option right
at the top when you choose Tools menu => AutoCorrect.

You might find some other ideas of interest in an article titled 'To control
Word, first dumb it down, then smarten it up' starting on page 33 of some
notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will",
which are available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

In Word 2004, the setting is invisible.

Go to Word>Preferences>Edit and make sure "Show paste options buttons is
on".

Now add a table and type something in it. Allow Word to capitalise it.
When it makes the change, you will see a blue underline flash under the
letter that it capitalised.

Now, hover your cursor over the letter that changed. A little (tiny!)
drop-down arrow will appear. Click it.

You will then see a symbol with the blue underline and a flame! Click that.

You will get a menu: the middle option is "Stop autocapitalising table
cells". Think carefully before turning it off, because once you have turned
it off, there is no easy way to turn it back on again :)

(They goofed: they put the "turn off" control in the little floatie, they
forgot to put the "Turn back on" control in there.)

Hope this helps
