HELP -- MS Word headers and footers

W

whitewater262

I'm trying to meet a project deadline, and I'm struggling with the
headers and footers in my document. By the way, I'm using MS Word
2003.

I'd like to change the headers on the right hand page throughout the
document so they reflect the title of that section. For example, if
the title of chapter 2 is "Eating moss is good for you" then that's
what I'd like to appear in the header of the right hand page.

However, every time I've tried to do this, it makes my changes carry
through the entire document, or it starts a whole new series of page
numbers (each section becomes page 1).

I could really use some help with this and I'll welcome any replies.

First, go to File > Page Setup > Layout and check "Different odd and even".

Second, make sure the title of each section has the same style (for example,
"Heading 1" style), and that nothing else in the document uses that style.

Third, open the header area (which should say "Odd Page Header"). Insert (or
replace the current contents with) a StyleRef field that contains the name of
the style used for the section titles. To do this, click Insert > Field, select
StyleRef from the Field Names list, and choose the style from the Style Name
list.

There's more about this at http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm.

There's no logical reason I can see for the page numbering restarting. But if
that does happen, then click the Format Page Number button on the Header/Footer
toolbar and choose "Continue from previous section". You'll have to repeat that
in each section where a bad restart happened.
