Help! - - MSACCESS.EXE - Application Error

Marie

I want to restrict the menu and toolbar options available
in a multi user database. I made a copy of the db, set the
options and closed it. Options included, only one tool bar
and the menu bar containing file and help only. The file
option was restricted to close and exit only. Looked just
fine.

However, when I went back into my original db, all the
settings were the same. I opened the db, holding the shift
key so I could reset my options. When I right click on the
menu bar to customize, I take the following error -

MSAccess.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x30231ace" referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on
ok to terminate. Click on Cancel to debug.

I've restarted, and rebooted (cold boot) my pc but still
get this message.

Two questions - First - How can I restore the original
settings?

Second - Is it possible to restrict the options for one db
without impacting other dbs?

You say you set changed the options in a copy of your db.
If this is so then just revert to the original..but for
future ref..if you select customize from the Tools menu,
you can reset the options back to access default.

There are a few things you can do to restrict access;

You can either make your database into an .MDE file, which
will mean that you cannot further modify your queries or
forms.

Or you can set group and user permissions for access to
the db.

I did revert to my original db, but the settings remained
the same as for the copy, i.e. the only menu options are
File and Help. Under file, there is only exit. There is
only one tool bar displayed, it is a custom tool bar with
a print icon only. The tool bar does not allow
customization. The settings apply to all dbs, even new
ones that I create.

To bypass the initial settings, one holds the shift key
when opening the application, and then can customize the
settings (or return to the default). The problem is that I
take the error when I try to customize the settings
regardless of wether I held the shift key when I opened
the db.

I have distributed an mde file, and users cannot modify
querys forms or modules, but I don't want them to be able
to access the tables except from the windows. My goal was
to restrict the menu options so they can't see the
database window, thereby preventing inadvertant switching
to that view and potentially updating tables.

Hi Marie,

It sounds like you might have altered the built in Access toolbars.

Try selecting Tools - Customize and then click on the "Toolbars" tab at the
top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the toolbar named
"Menu Bar" (this is the default Access one that you seem to have edited.)
and click on "Reset" to restore it back to normal.

You should now open your back up db and create a new toolbar from scratch. I
have an article which might help you here:
http://jamiessoftware.tk/articles.html I've put in lots of screenshots to
try and make things clearer.

Once you have figured out the difference between the built in Access
toolbars and how to create and use toolbars which are specific to your mdb
everything falls into place.

I forgot to mention that you should just open Access without opening an mdb
file to restore the intrinsic File menu in case the error message is related
to the original mdb. If the error message persists then all I can suggest is
that you put your MS Office disk in and try the restore or reinstall option.

Thanks, I'll get your article. The problem is that I don't
have a "tools" option. The only menu items I have are file
and help. The only tool bar is an custom one with only one
icon (print).

I did try the repair option, but it looked for the
installation disk which is at the office but I'm not. As
I'll try it today when I'm in the office. Seems to me that
an application should not permit one to inadvertantly
change settings so they're unchangable.

Oh well - live and learn!

You can also right click over any toolbar and select "Customize" from the
pop-up menu.
