HELP - my autocorrect entries are vanishing

I'm running Word XP under WP Pro SP2. I enter an autocorrect item, click
"Add" and click "OK". It works a couple of times, then vanishes - when I go
back to the list, all the abbreviations I've laboriously plugged in have
disappeared.
Any ideas, please?
