Help. My TOC has dissapeared

All my documents today open without the TOC but show the field code -
{TOC \o \u}.
If I do CTRL SHIFT F9 I get the TOC.
How did this change occur, and how do I undo this??
I opened a new document sent to me today. Could this have caused it?

Tools | Options | View - Deselect Field Codes. You can also right-click in
your field and Toggle Field Codes.

Alt+F9 will toggle the display from field codes (what you are seeing) and
field results. Do NOT use Ctrl+Shift+F9; this will unlink the field, making
it impossible to update the TOC again.
