Help! Need to turn off "Displaying nonprinting characters"

E

Elena

A couple of weeks ago I used the shortcut key to "display
nonprinting characters" to edit a document in Word 2002.
For some reason, I have been unable to switch it off
since then. Every document I open--whether new or one
that's saved shows these characters.

I tried clicking on the shortcut key, tried using ctrl-
shift-8 and even used the installation CD to repair any
dammaged/lost files. All to no avail.

I take it my last recourse is to reinstall the whole
program? I really don't want to do that.

Probably reinstalling won't do you any good. I hope you won't need to do so.

With only one document open...

Tools => Options => View

Under Formatting marks:
Uncheck anything you don't want, especially "All."

(I leave my paragraph marks, tab characters and hidden text showing all the
time, but then I like to know why my documents look the way they do.)

Close Word. Restart your computer. If your settings are not saved, you
probably have a corrupt registry data key (which reinstalling or deleting
normal.dot won't fix). If so, see:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/DataKeySettings.htm and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissngMenusEtc.htm for help in resetting
it.
