Help needed for resource utilization

I

Irfan

Hi There,

I'm having a typical need. In our company, we have plenty of ongoing
projects in development, with durations ranging from 1 day to 2 months and
occassionally more than 2 months. We do not maintain any sort of project plan
or any RBS. Usually we assign the project to the developers from different
technologies (CRM, Java, etc..).

I'm interested in tracking the resources working in projects. I need to know
which resource is working on which projects, which resource is free/available
from which time.

I've earlier used Project Server with my last employer, but with proper
resource planning - usage of Project Plan (MPP), publishing it onto PS, then
making usage of timesheet, which made tracking easier, but with this current
situation, I'm unable to arrive at a stop where in I could use project server
to track my resources, without having any project plan.

I could ofcourse make use of minimal plans though...

I appreciate your comments, ideas, thoughts that could help me out.

Thanks,
irfan

Hi Irfan,

as Paul suggest the Resource plan is a possibillity, but generally, without
any schedule there is no possibillty to tack resources. Even if this means
you only track a couple of tasks.

Also, the first part I would do is actually siting down and write what you
will need. "Tacking resources" is a very big long string :) and you will need
to define this a little better before you make the call of the technoology
feature.

If you only need a high level utilasation plan the Project plan will do the
trick. If you are after "day by day" utilasation plan you will need to track
in a much deeper granularity ( e.g. on an assignment level ). Once you know
what you need to track in detail, you can map the requirement to the specific
tool feature.
I hope that will give you a direction. Please ask if you have more detailed
questions
Thanks

Hi All,

Thanks to Paul & Marc for valuable comments.

As said earlier, my only need is to keep track of resources (personnel)
working in different projects. Yes, as you said, it would be at a high level
- like I would like to know which resource is working on which project(s) for
what duration (may be from xx date to yy date) and which resource is free for
what period.

Thanks,
irfan

Why don't you use the View Availability and View Assignments functionality
from the Resource Center in PWA? Hope this helps.

Hi Paul,

I followed the link you provided, but seems to me of not much help. I
request you to kindly let me know how could I use only the resource plan. I'm
having PS 2007 with MS Project 2007

Thanks,
irfan
