Help needed with Sub Webs

R

Ray Cole

I am getting an error when I attempt to change a folder to a web. I have
been using the parent web for years on a hard disc and publish externally
to a host site. All I am trying to do is to add one more web. Now
I get the error message telling me it is impossible.

When I create a new folder within the main web and ask for it to be a
subweb, I get the error "Server error: Unable to create a disk-based web at
"C:Documents---\site\new_folder" because the parent web would not be a
disk-based web."

My webs are on a Windows XP using FP2K

Microsoft support site says that this means that the inetpub/wwwroot folder
has the _vpi_pvt and _private files and need to be removed. These
instructions seem to apply to Windows 2000 but not to Windows XP. I cannot
find the wwwroot folder on the machine.

Is it possible that Windows XP does not work with FP2K. Or is it possible
that one of the Microsoft security fixes just screwed this up?

All help appreciated

If you are working in a folder path based web it is a disc based web and does not need the FP SE or use inetpub/wwwroot
C:Documents --- \site\new_folder is a disc based web path
If the site you have open is C:Documents --- \site\
- then you can create the subweb named new_folder
- but you can not create a subweb under a folder named "new_folder" that is a part of the root web named "site"

You can not create a diskbased Web off of a Serverbased Web or vice
versa.
Open your current Web in FP using its http adress. You can then create a
folder, rightclick it and convert it to a subWeb.

Thanks Jens Peter

I understand the concept. My problem is that to my knowledge I have never
published locally on this computer. I have always published to a commercial
web host.

I know that on a Windows 2000 machine I can find inetpub/wwwroot that
contains the files created when publishing to the disc has taken place. On
that machine, I could follow the Microsoft directions in removing the files
(_private, et). But where do I find a similar set of files on WindowsXP?
There is not a folder called inetpub on the C-disk.

With no problem I can open a folder outside my web and make it a web. The
problem is that for some reason what appears to be a disc based web,
residing on C-disk, looks like to be web based to F2K.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks Stefan,

I appreciate your guidance. However, the site I have open is
C:Documents --- \site\new_folder and I cannot change that folder to a web.
When I try to do this, I get the error message. Something has happened that
makes the path appear to FP2K that it is part of the root web.

Microsoft gives directions to go the wwwroot folder and remove the _private,
et al files and the problem will go away. However, on Windows XP I cannot
find this folder. Any idea where published data goes on Windows XP?

All help appreciated.

If you have the DBW Open in FP (using File Open Web/Site) at
C:\Documents...\...\...\site\new_folder
Then it is already a FP web
- Why are you trying to make it a Web (or Subweb) When it is already a Web ?

Thanks again Stefan,

My basic site is about 50 megs and contains 5 subwebs. The subwebs permit me
to easily update changes to the subwebs without dealing with the complete 50
megs. The basic web (50 megs with subwebs) are FP webs and have been working
well for years.

I am now attempting to change one folder of the FP web to be a subweb and
get the error message. When I put the error message into Google, it sends me
to the Microsoft site that tells me the computer must have the _private, et
al files which confuses FP. If these files can be removed, then the problem
should go away. I cannot find the rootweb on the Windows XP. Do you have any
ideas where these are located? There is no folder called inetpub.

Thanks for sticking with me.

Unless you answer specifically which web you have open in FP (full path), and where in that web the folder named "new_folder" is, no
one can help

- there is no "rootweb on the Windows XP" for disc based webs, especially in Win XP Home w/o IIS

Stefan,

The complete path is:
C:\Documents and Settings\ray\My Documents\My Webs\YWCA_site\New_Folder

The site is: http://www.worldywca.org/New_Folder/

I have other webs on the site:
http://www.worldywca.org/natassoc/index.htm
http://www.worldywca.org/campaign/index.htm
http://www.worldywca.org/WorldCouncil/index.htm
http://www.worldywca.org/young_womens/index.htm

So when I go to "New_Folder" within FP and try to make a web, that is where
I get the error message telling me that "Unable to create a disk-based web
at "C:Documents---\site\new_folder" because the parent web would not be
disk-based web."

The other subwebs were added when I was using Windows 2000. I can still add
subwebs to a copy of the web based on Windows 2000.

I have Windows XP Professional and using MS FrontPage 2000.

I hope the additional information helps.

Locally on your PC, at least YWCA_site is (or must be) a root web
Possibly My Webs may also be a root web (empty default FP web)
(if it is, then YWCA_site is probably a subweb of My Webs)

So you have a DBW (disc based web) - root or subweb - at:
C:\Documents and Settings\ray\My Documents\My Webs\YWCA_site

You must have that FP DBW open in FP in order to convert the folder in it (New_Folder) to a subweb
- rename the folder before you create the subweb (if you want a different subweb name)

That local DBW in FP probably also has (or can have) the subwebs natassoc, campaign, WorldCouncil, young_womens

Unless your server is masking the FP SE, it does not appear to have the FP SE (or they may be corrupt)
- are you publishing using FTP mode?
- if not, have your host reapply or repair the FP SE on you root and all subwebs

According to http://www.worldywca.org/_vti_inf.html
The server location http://www.worldywca.org/ does not have the FP SE installed (or they are corrupt)
And therefore according to http://www.worldywca.org/New_Folder/_vti_inf.html
New_Folder is not a FP web
- it is only a folder under http://www.worldywca.org/
(on a server w/ directory listing enabled and no index.htm page)
Once the FP SE are repaired at http://www.worldywca.org/ you can open that online web in FP and convert the folder New_Folder to a
FP subweb

Similarly all the other sites you list are all just folders w/ and index.htm page in the online web at http://www.worldywca.org/

To a server w/o the FP SE a subweb is just a folder

| Stefan,
|
| The complete path is:
| C:\Documents and Settings\ray\My Documents\My Webs\YWCA_site\New_Folder
|
| The site is: http://www.worldywca.org/New_Folder/
|
| I have other webs on the site:
| http://www.worldywca.org/campaign/index.htm
| http://www.worldywca.org/WorldCouncil/index.htm
| http://www.worldywca.org/young_womens/index.htm
|
| So when I go to "New_Folder" within FP and try to make a web, that is where
| I get the error message telling me that "Unable to create a disk-based web
| at "C:Documents---\site\new_folder" because the parent web would not be
| disk-based web."
|
| The other subwebs were added when I was using Windows 2000. I can still add
| subwebs to a copy of the web based on Windows 2000.
|
| I have Windows XP Professional and using MS FrontPage 2000.
|
| I hope the additional information helps.

Stefan, thanks for getting into this with me.

I assure you that all subwebs are indeed subwebs and not folders. The
existing subwebs work correctly. I publish them as subwebs, they are nested
under the main web. I do not publish via FTP, but using FTP I can see all
the _private files and folders for them. Therefore these private folders
must be masked during an HTTP check as you have tried.

You were concerned that maybe My Webs could be a root web. Just now as a
test, I have started other webs under My Webs and they worked. Under those
webs I opened subwebs and they work as they should.

I am now to the point where I am going to go through the detect and repair
process to see if there is corruption in the web. I need to get a copy of
the installation disc, so it will take a few hours.

Are we certain that FP2K works with Windows XP Professional?

Thanks again.

That local DBW in FP probably also has (or can have) the subwebs natassoc,
campaign, WorldCouncil, young_womens
Unless your server is masking the FP SE, it does not appear to have the FP SE (or they may be corrupt)
- are you publishing using FTP mode?
- if not, have your host reapply or repair the FP SE on you root and all subwebs

According to http://www.worldywca.org/_vti_inf.html
The server location http://www.worldywca.org/ does not have the FP SE
installed (or they are corrupt)
And therefore according to http://www.worldywca.org/New_Folder/_vti_inf.html
New_Folder is not a FP web
- it is only a folder under http://www.worldywca.org/
(on a server w/ directory listing enabled and no index.htm page)
Once the FP SE are repaired at http://www.worldywca.org/ you can open that
online web in FP and convert the folder New_Folder to a
FP subweb

Similarly all the other sites you list are all just folders w/ and
index.htm page in the online web at http://www.worldywca.org/
To a server w/o the FP SE a subweb is just a folder

| Stefan,
|
| The complete path is:
| C:\Documents and Settings\ray\My Documents\My Webs\YWCA_site\New_Folder
|
| The site is: http://www.worldywca.org/New_Folder/
|
| I have other webs on the site:
| http://www.worldywca.org/campaign/index.htm
| http://www.worldywca.org/WorldCouncil/index.htm
| http://www.worldywca.org/young_womens/index.htm
|
| So when I go to "New_Folder" within FP and try to make a web, that is where
| I get the error message telling me that "Unable to create a disk-based web
| at "C:Documents---\site\new_folder" because the parent web would not be
| disk-based web."
|
| The other subwebs were added when I was using Windows 2000. I can still add
| subwebs to a copy of the web based on Windows 2000.
|
| I have Windows XP Professional and using MS FrontPage 2000.
|
| I hope the additional information helps.

OK
- yes FP2K works with Windows XP Professional

If it is only the root web YWCA_site that is having a problem with the folder New_Folder being converted to a subweb
- check if you can create another folder (say cgi_bin) in that local web (under the root) and convert it to a subweb (you can delete
it later)
- try renaming New_Folder to something else and converting it to a subweb
- detect and repair will not correct bad FP META data in a local FP web

1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files in the folder FrontPageTempDir
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and/or %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden web cache files (*.web) files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
(where %USERPROFILE% should result in the path: C:\Documents and Settings\ray\)

It's not just the presence of the _private and images folders but also the _hidden _vti_cnf and _vti_pvt folders and their files
that makes the folder a FP DBW web / subweb
(those should never be copied from one folder/web to another)
More importantly FP tracks which folders in a web are subweb folders through the file named "services" in _vti_pvt. In your root
web it should have something like:
/
/campaign
/WorldCouncil
/young_womens
(For your current root and 3 subwebs)
- if somehow New_Folder is listed, delete the entry

FYI
FP disc based webs behave best it they are top level folders w/o spaces in the name / path on your hard drive
Open your root web YWCA_site (which should have the 3 subwebs in it already)
Delete the folder New_Folder (move any content to another folder if needed)
The File Publish Web (All pages including Subwebs) and enter a new Disc based web location
- say C:\YWCA_site\
Close the current web and open the new DBW by File Open Web and browsing to C:\YWCA_site\ and run a tool recalculate hyperlinks
(you can eventually reopen the old web under My Webs and right click its root to delete it and its content)
Create the folder New_Folder (or what ever you are really going to call it) in the root web C:\YWCA_site\ and select convert to web
- you will need to use a File Publish (All Pages, Including Subwebs) the 1st time you publish to your server at
http://www.worldywca.org/ to get the new DBW in sync w/ your online web

You can also open your online web at http://www.worldywca.org/ in FP (File Open Web and enter the same URL), and then just use File
Publish (All Pages, Including Subwebs) but select the new top level disc based location at C:\YWCA_site\ to create the new DBW
- Since your online host apparently supports the FP SE try to convert it to a subweb online
- If it will not convert to a subweb online in FP, delete the folder New_Folder before publishing
