Help! No entries shown in Address Book, but OK in Contacts folder

M

Mesquire

Windows Vista Home Premium
Office/Outlook 2003 SP1 (updated to SP2)
Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1

Got my new Windows Vista computer. I installed Office/Outlook 2003 SP1,
then updated to SP2, and Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1. I ran
Outlook and I elected to have setup wizard configured it as No Email -
planning to leave that for my office IT guy to add my email accounts
later. I then connected my PPC to the computer to sync with Contacts
etc., and that went without problem - all entries present and accounted
for in Contacts folder.

But then I noticed there was no entry in Address Book.

I have tried the following without success:
1. Rebuild Outlook Address Book service
2. Reinstall Office 2003
3. Create a 2nd Contacts folder and added new entries

What else can I do? How can I show my Contacts in Address Book? Thanks
a million!

With no email configured, you don't need an address book service since it is only used to send items via email.

Your contacts folder has all of your addresses, electronic or not, and is the default repository for addresses AND contacts. Your address book is a virtual view of your contacts folder that contains only contacts with electronic addresses used for sending email and faxes.

Thanks. Actually I knew the behavior you described, but the problem is
that no entry is visible even AFTER I have added email accounts.

I did forget to mention if I add a new entry to Contacts it is visible
under Address Book, but not my existing entries synchronized from my PPC
(on WM6). I have about 300 categorized entries in Outlook Contacts,
even more on the PPC since it's mixed with Live Messenger contacts,
customized with photo and ringtones and all, and I don't feel like
entering them from scratch.

Will running the setup wizard (the one that appears when OL is first
installed) again help? I can't find anything on how to run it again

If you open your contacts folder, are the addresses added from your mobile device resolved? If not, resolve them and then see if they show up in your address book.

By the way, you made no mention in your first post that you had added mail accounts after all without waiting for your IT guy to do it.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that I added my personal accounts to see if
this problem could be resolved with email accounts - not that it made a
difference to the problem :(

Yes, they are all resolved (according to my PPC's ActiveSync). If
addresses aren't, I don't think either WMDC or ActiveSync would have
transferred entries successfully from PPC to Outlook in the first place
(and vice versa)

Is there a way to run the wizard that loads the first time a user runs
Outlook? Or is that not relevant?

In my many years of using H/PC, PPC, and WM5/6, it shouldn't make a
difference - if it isn't resolved, the entries on the PPC would not
have made it across to populate a new Outlook installation, which at
present are all present and accounted for.

open the contact in outlook and verify the email address is underlined =
resolving

you may need to create a new profile with an email acct in it from the
start - it sounds like the address book service is not properly configured.
