Help!!! Office 2003 Pro - setup keeps failing

J

JP Bedard

I'm trying to install my Office 2003 pro on a new computer (complete install)
and after the progress bar gets to about 20% I get the following warning
message:

Error 1711. Setup cannot write information to your hard disk. Check to make
certain enough disk space is available, and check your connection to the
network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see
D:\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\1033\SETUP.CHM.

I have 80 GB free disk space. Here is some more info about my system:
OS is Win2K Pro, P4 3.0 GH, 512 MB Ram, .....
I'm on a network with 2 other PC's. Second PC is a P4 2.8 GH running
Windows XP Home with MS Office XP (not pro) and the third PC is an older P2
running Win 98 SE and Office 97.

Things I've tried:
a) I've tried seaching MS Knowlege Base and cannot find anything. I did
find an article with "Error 1711" but the message was not the same (and
wasn't related to a setup problem).

b) I've downloaded and run the MS Office Cleanup utility and tried
re-installing MS Office with no luck.

c) I've also tried to delete all MS Office directories (although I can
delete 3 DLL files - in use I think?) and tried to re-install MS Office -
still no luck.

Can anyone help?

Hi, JP,

Try cleaning out your temp folder (c:\windows\temp, or c:\winnt\temp), and
try again. Any luck there?

Hi Susan.

Thanks for the reply. I cleared out the cache/temp folders and the install
still failed. However, I did continue digging to see if I could find out
what the mysterious Error 1711 message meant. After several more searches, I
found out that the Error 1711 was not true error. It turns out that I had an
outdated Microsoft Installer program. I discovered this after temporarily
giving up on the Office install and tried installing Frontpage. This time,
the install failed again, but gave me a different error message telling me
that the MS Installer was outdated.

Hopefully, this information can be useful to someone else.

Again, thank you.
