Hi All,
I am currently fighting a major problem with attachments, that seems to
relate to user/outlook profiles and whether or not the attachment contains
images of a certain format. It's a bit long-winded, but please bear with me,
I would appreciate any advice on how Outlook handles attachments that
contain embedded images.
Client is Windows 2000 with Office 2000 SR1, mailserver is Exhange 2003 on
Server 2003.
Most attachments are OK, but we are having problems with .PPT, .DOC & .PDF
documents that contain images. Unfortunately I can't work out what format
the images are because once they are imported into the document all info re
the format is lost. It seems that when the users open an attached document
with a certain format of image, Outlook tries to write the file to the
'SecureTemp' directory (the 'OLK#' one) but fails.
The important point to note is that the users are using Outlook OUTSIDE of
the locally logged in profile. So they login into their PC as DOMAIN1\user,
but run Outlook as DOMAIN2\user.
It would appear that when Outlook has to open an attachment it tries to save
a copy to the local c: drive, but seems not to be able to save it,
presumably because DOMAIN2\user hasn't got the rights to the local drive,
which kinda makes sense to me (even if it is an 'odd' way to use Outlook).
It doesn't matter where you configure the 'SecureTemp' to point to, still
doesn't work when writing to 'c:\temp' for example.
I've tested this by getting copies of the problem documents and deleting all
the images, one by one, until I can open the attachment in Outlook, for the
most part the problem is caused by one or two images that presumably are of
a similar format. If I leave all the remaining images in the document,
Outlook doesn't write a temporary file and the attachment opens OK.
My main question is why does Outlook have to write out temporary files for
SOME images and not others ? And why does Outlook even care what types of
images are embedded in a document ?
Unfortunately I'm stuck with this Outlook configuration for the moment,
there is a firewall between DOMAIN1 and DOMAIN2 that only allows login from
DOMAIN1 to DOMAIN2 via Outlook, I cannot browse DOMAIN2, so therefore I
cannot add permissions for accounts in DOMAIN2 on the local PC, and cannot
select DOMAIN2 as as a login domain on the PC. Log in to DOMAIN2 is only via
Outllook.
Incidentaly Outlook 2003 behaves the same way, unless cached exchange mode
is on (but that's not an option right now), and we do have OWA2003 as a
workaround for the moment, but I really would like to understand how (and
why) Outlook handles attachments the way it does.
cheers
