Help, please.. Delete key not working properly?

I just upgraded my system, but kept the same software. Win 98SE, and
Office 97. Before, I used to be able to highlight a whole word or lots
of text and hit the delete key, and poof! It would be deleted. Now, the
delete key will only work if I have only highlighted a single character.
How do I get the delete feature back?

I forgot, the "home" key used to take the cursor to the beginning of a
line before, now it does nothing, yet the "end" key still takes the
cursor to the end of the line. Anyone know the fix for this also?
